You may also know there are tax credits and rebates for green upgrades to your home, car or business. But did you know you can save money through eco-insurance? In our continuing quest to find discounts most people don’t know about, we’ve come up with 6 you may want to check out this Earth
Day:
● Drive Less and Pay Less-- How?
If you drive less then you can sign up for the Pay as your drive program (PAYD) like progressive Insurance offers. Safe driving habits can boost your savings with Progressive’s Snapshot program. Just plug the Snapshot device into your car’s diagnostic port and it will collect data on how often and when you drive, as well as how cautious you are.
Your safe driving habits can save you money on your car insurance and don’t require extra legwork on your part. The device sends the data back to and, hopefully, (depending on how safe you are) saves you a bit of cash. Moreover, there are no negative consequences of driving fast with the device in your car, which is a plus point!
Estimates show PAYD participants drive at least 10% less. And if 30% of US drivers drove 10% less, we’d save about 55 million tons of CO2 over 10 years!
● Green Vehicle Discounts
Usually, companies offer green vehicle discounts on automobile insurance for those cars that are eco-friendly to the environment. It's not necessary for the vehicle to be a car, it can also be a yacht and boat. Travelers Insurance also gives a discount of up to 10% if you own or lease a hybrid or electric vehicle. And if your car uses an alternative energy source like biodiesel, natural gas, or hydrogen, you could get a discount for that, too. The main aim is to recognize the contribution of those individuals who aim to make a difference. Only a handful of reputable insurance companies offer legitimate discounts on green vehicles.
● Eco-Friendly Buildings (Save Energy)
An eco-friendly building will include the following aspects
● Improved Insulation :
Energy efficiency is boosted by reducing the amount of air escaping the Building
● Rooftop Plantings
: Green roofs reduce storm runoff and help mitigate the urban heat island effect.
● Enhanced Ventilation
● Building Orientation :
Based on the sun, sitting dramatically impacts heating and cooling, especially in hotter climates
● Water Conservation :
Efficient plumbing fixtures and reusing wastewater reduce consumption.
● Building Materials :
Eco-friendly building materials reduce VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions
Many insurance companies offer discounts for green homes – but they aren’t all the same. Travelers Insurance offers up to a 5% discount if your home is certified by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Other companies offer discounts for green building materials like
Energy Star windows, doors, and roofs. Companies also offer discounts for green construction techniques that are also storm-resistant! If your home is in a catastrophe-prone area, you may be able to offset insurance costs with upgrades like storm-resistant window shutters. So you can feel safe in your beautiful coastal home and save money too.
● Greener than the average home!
Tiny homes or small homes with less square footage are never a bad idea. If you can squeeze in a small pace, it will not only bring your family closer but also decrease the amount of insurance you are paying in your homeowner's insurance. Less square footage means less price of insurance.
Even some unconventional building methods can earn you savings. For example, insurance companies tend to like straw bale homes because they are sprayed with flame-retardant material and are very durable in storms.
This idea shows that green insurance will only reduce your expenses by reducing the number of losses one faces. Small homes, a small car, less valuable items, all contribute to reducing the amount of monthly insurance payment you pay to your insurance company
● Ensure the money you expect to save
You can save the money required on upgrading to energy-efficient or renewable energy production at your places. You get discounts on shifting your energy supply to a greener way from your insurance companies.
For instance, a power outage could dash your greenest hopes. But you can purchase coverage that compensates you the cost of purchasing electricity from another source, the cost of getting back online - and even lost income.
Businesses can also insure their expected savings from energy efficiency projects. When you get a project proposal, it should include an energy savings estimate. These policies will pay you if your savings underperform by a certain percentage (you can often get a check if you fall short by a mere 10% - that’s not even an epic fail!)
● Speciality Business Coverages
Some insurance companies offer optional additional coverages that help rebuild a building in a greener way. CNA’s EcoCare Property Upgrade Endorsement will pay a business extra to rebuild with green structures or materials. It even covers green roofs, recycling costs, green architects, building certifications, and business income for the extra time it may take. Some other additional coverages are specific to a certain kind of industry. For example, Perishable Food Reduction products are devices provided by some insurance companies to monitor the temperature and condition of produce, reducing unnecessary waste. Such devices are useful in food industries or in Restaurant/Hotel businesses. Moreover, there are many other insurances also for example global weather insurance and etc.
There is green coverage insurance for every industry, as with time the value of green insurance is increasing in our environment. Look for green coverage for your industry through Defy Insurance.
